Key Nintendo Executive Believes “Generating New Ideas” Is More Important Than Expanding Budgets

He's right, you know.

Nintendo Plans to Prevent Scalping for the Switch 2 by Ensuring Sufficient Supply, Nintendo of America

I know I’m not exactly an “unbias source” when it comes to talking about a certain gaming publisher. Heck, I’m the host of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast! So, obviously, I wear my “fan pride” on my sleeve. However, I have plenty of proof to back up the greatness of The Big N, and these last few days have proved it. I’ve written numerous articles breaking down the financial briefing that highlighted the Switch’s success, games like The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom selling 2.5 million in five days, and so on. There were also stories about the company’s future and how it intends to keep riding its wave of success.

That translated to an investor Q&A that they did, where hardware department head Ko Shiota had the following to say about continuing to make great 1st party titles:

“I also think that the most important thing for Nintendo is how to generate new ideas. Great ideas are not born just by spending development costs, but we would like to continue to focus on the process of creating interesting things by having developers from both hardware and software teams share ideas.”

Isn’t that just a simple yet beautiful way of looking at things? Plus, we can look at the last couple years and see that mindset in action. Echoes of Wisdom used new ideas to change up the gameplay and put Zelda as the protagonist. Pikmin 4 redesigned parts of its gameplay to ensure that it was accessible to gamers. Super Mario Bros Wonder did away with “standard elements” of past titles to do various fresh things, and that doesn’t even mention the Wonder Flower!

Oh, and all of those games were big hits, and that doesn’t even talk about others like Splatoon, Tears of the Kingdom, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and more! Nintendo knows what it’s doing with games, and that’s why many trust it and buy its products.
