PlayStation to Use AI for Faster Game Development

By Solomon ThompsonSeptember 29, 2024
PlayStation to Use AI for Faster Game Development

PlayStation is stepping up its use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to make game development faster and more efficient. This approach reflects a broader industry trend, with companies like Ubisoft and EA adopting similar tech to streamline processes. Sony aims to enhance game production quality while reducing time and costs, which could lead to quicker releases for fans.

As spotted by Insider Gaming, Sony’s latest corporate report highlights that these technologies will help deliver games “rapidly and at low cost to a broader range of fans.” PlayStation’s recent production of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 used voice recognition software, allowing automatic synchronization of subtitles, which “significantly shortened the subtitling process.”

Sony is also investing in its Volumetric Capture Studio, which generates high-quality 3D data for both internal and potential external use. According to the report, PlayStation is also exploring real-time 3D processing collaborations with Epic Games and their Unreal Engine to push the boundaries of game production.

While AI is helping speed up game development, it’s also stirring up some concerns. Many are worried that it could end up replacing human jobs. The big question now is whether the push for faster production will come at the cost of creative jobs that require a human touch. Only time will tell.
