Ken Kutaragi Reveals Sony’s Early Doubts About the PlayStation: “Everyone Told Us We Would Fail”

Ken Kutaragi, known as “the father of PlayStation,” shared a fascinating story about the early days of PlayStation development. He revealed that when the idea was first discussed, everyone at Sony doubted its success. It’s hard to believe now, but back then, the gaming industry was not as supportive.

Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, Kutaragi took the audience back to 1993. He and his team traveled around the world to get feedback from developers. According to Kutaragi, the response was overwhelmingly negative. He recalled, “We wanted to share our passion and hear what developers thought. But most of them just told us, ‘Don’t do it. You are going to fail.’” The pushback was strong, not only from external developers but also from within Sony itself. Despite this, Kutaragi and his team remained determined.

Today, it’s clear they made the right decision. The PlayStation brand has become a gaming giant, with multiple successful consoles and a loyal fan base. But back then, the path was not easy.
