Nintendo Reveals Big Opening Sales Numbers For Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door Remake

Luigi's Mansion did good, too!

Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door Review

While the Nintendo Switch software lineup looks packed in the upcoming months, the first six months of 2024 were a bit sparse, if I’m being honest. Princess Peach Showtime was nice, but it was short, and the rest of the titles that we got were remasters or remakes. That’s not to say all of them weren’t anticipated, though, as Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door got the remaster/remake treatment, and as I noted in my review, the game absolutely holds up to this day, especially with the improvements.

Still, the question soon became, “How much will it sell?” Remasters and remakes aren’t always the most reliable sellers unless they’re big-name titles. Thankfully, Nintendo has dropped its latest financial data, and it revealed that Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door has sold 1.76 million units by the end of June. So, if you were to count what it likely got in July, it possibly has over 2 million units sold now.

They also noted that Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD sold 1.17 units in the few days it was out before June ended, so, once again, Nintendo’s first-party titles continue to cross the million-seller mark.

Whether this leads to the changes in the Paper Mario franchise (meaning going back to the true RPG format like TTYD) that fans have been begging for remains to be seen. No matter what, though, the game is a hit, and that proves it was worth the effort to bring it back.
