Ubisoft CEO Condemns Hate Against Assassin's Creed Shadows Developers

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has spoken out against the online hate directed at the developers of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The game, which features a black samurai named Yasuke as one of its dual protagonists, has faced severe criticism for perceived historical inaccuracies and what some view as forced inclusivity.

Guillemot expressed his concerns in an interview, denouncing the “malicious and personal online attacks” against Ubisoft’s team members. He urged the gaming community and the industry to stand against these hateful acts, emphasizing his support for the creative decisions made by the developers.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in Feudal Japan, has been criticized not for its gameplay but for its inclusivity elements. Some, including Elon Musk, have commented that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) “kills art.” Ubisoft has defended its choices, stating that both protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, add unique elements to the game.

Despite the backlash, the game has seen positive reactions. Pre-orders are strong, indicating that many players are excited about the new setting and characters.

Guillemot’s stance highlights a growing issue in the gaming community: the need to balance creative freedom with audience expectations while combating online toxicity. As Assassin’s Creed Shadows approaches its release, Ubisoft remains firm in supporting its developers and the game’s inclusive vision.
