Shigeru Miyamoto Confirms New “Status” Within Nintendo

The baton has been passed.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario, Nintendo

When you look at some of the most influential people in gaming history, Shigeru Miyamoto will inevitably be at the top of many people’s lists. He’s the man who made Mario & Luigi, Link, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and more! He’s the reason Nintendo is what is is today. As such, he’s had many roles within the company over the decades of his tenure, including helping make the Super Mario Bros Movie, which, if you recall, made over a billion dollars at the box office last year. Yet, if you were to ask him his role currently within The Big N, his answer wouldn’t be what you think.

There was a shareholders’ meeting for Nintendo today, which was translated by VGC, and one person asked Shigeru Miyamoto about his current role, and he noted that he’s fine with where he is, and is more than happy to keep passing the baton to the younger generation:

“While I am not completely disconnected from game development, I am no longer involved in the day-to-day work and leave it to the younger generation. The transition is going well, but even those I handed this over to are getting older, so I want to pass the baton to even younger people. I am still closely involved with Pikmin Bloom, so I hope you will continue to support it.”

We’ve seen the “youth movement” recently in Nintendo, including having multiple younger developers influence Super Mario Bros Wonder, which was a smash hit. If such baton passing continues, we could see even more fresh ideas within many franchises, all the while seeing Miyamoto happen about the games produced.
