Uncharted Movie Sequel Confirmed by Sony Pictures

By Jakejames LugoJune 19, 2024

It looks like fans of the Uncharted series can expect another live-action film based on the adventures of Nathan Drake. During the Sony Pictures panel at CineEurope 2024, as reported by Variety, the studio gave insight into some of their upcoming movie projects. One of the projects mentioned in the pipeline of movies being made was a sequel to the 2022 Uncharted film. However, no official title or release day was given for the sequel during the presentation.

While details about the Uncharted sequel are slim for now, the confirmation from Sony Pictures at the trade show gives a clear indication that the film is currently being worked on. More than likely, actors like Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg will return to their roles, while also introducing new characters into the mix. Whether we’ll see others who were involved in the first film, such as Sophia Turner Ali, is unknown.

The trio of adventurers Nathan Drake Victor Sully Sullivan and Chloe Frazier

The original Uncharted movie was released by Sony Pictures in February 2022 and starred Tom Holland as the popular treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Tom’s co-star was Mark Wahlberg in the role of Nathan’s partner, Victor Sullivan (Sully). The duo was first introduced in the Uncharted video game series, where the two of them travel the world searching for ancient treasures and encounter many dangerous adventures in the process. The first film went on to make around $407 million at the box office, despite a lukewarm reception from film critics and fans of the series online.

In 2023, Uncharted producer Charles Roven stated that he was interested in making another Uncharted film after finishing the second one. When speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Charles had this to say when asked about it. “Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.”

Besides the quote made by Charles about a sequel, actor Mark Wahlberg also told IGN in an interview that he was told to start growing in his mustache for the part of Victor Sullivan. In the games, Victor has a prominent mustache that is a trademark of his character’s overall look. “Actually, I just got a call today that they got the script in… I can’t grow a real beard and mustache, but they said, ‘Start growing your mustache. It’s going to take a while.’ I’d be interested to see what the story’s like, and where that adventure takes us. But I’m excited. I know audiences really loved the first one, so we’ll see.”

Uncharted fans will have to remain patient for now. It looks like those behind the first film and movie-goers are interested in the series continuing on the big screen. We’ll just have to wait until Sony Pictures decides to release new details about the sequel in the coming months. In the meantime, everyone can get their fix of Uncharted from the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection which contains all the games released on PlayStation home consoles.
