Sony Declares PS5 Its Most Profitable Console Generation Yet

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the PlayStation 5 is its “most profitable generation to date.” During a recent business segment meeting, Sony revealed that the PS5 generation has reached $106 billion in sales over four years. This figure is close to the $107 billion total sales generated by the PS4 from 2013 to 2019.

Despite the PS5’s success, the PS4 remains significant, with both consoles having 49 million active users as of April. This means half of Sony’s total console user base is still on the PS4.

Hideaki Nishino, one of the executives stepping in for the retired CEO Jim Ryan, highlighted that the PS5 user base continues to grow and now accounts for half of Sony’s active monthly consoles. He noted that PS5 players are more engaged than those on the PS4, a trend expected to continue.

Sony also shared that PS5 users logged 2.4 billion gameplay hours by April 30, compared to 1.4 billion hours on the PS4. Additionally, PS5 users spend more on add-ons, services, and peripherals than PS4 users did at the same point in their cycle.

Sony’s strategy includes releasing major single-player titles like God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima on consoles first to drive PlayStation engagement. Meanwhile, live service games will launch simultaneously on both PC and console.
