The Story
The ninth volume of Mieruko-chan focuses on Michiru and her… otherworldly obsession with Miko… again. But before we get to that, we start off with seeing Michiru completely naked in the shower and soon, she’s joined by her sister… and agent… Yoh. Yoh takes the role of overprotective sister to the extreme as we will see later on throughout the volume.
For now, Michiru returns to school where she is summoned to the faculty office; however, when she is, she’s in the middle of a conversation with Miko and, therefore, invites her to come along. Turns out she got a zero on the test despite answering every question on it. Michiru says that she’s not good at studying; however, before the conversation can continue, Miko is asked to leave the room because Zen-sensei says that Yoh called about something and the conversation becomes a private matter. Despite this, the tentacle monster attached to Michiru refuses to let Miko go and despite being outside, she can hear the entire conversation.
The end result is that Miko is asked to help Michiru study so they organize a study session at Miko’s house… much to her little brother’s chagrin. During the session, Miko is offered some Pocky but Michiru dives in and steals a bite. This causes Miko to become enveloped by her tentacle monster and, therefore, can’t see anything. She goes to move but knocks a drink over on Michiru. Luckily for Michiru, this means that she gets to wear Miko’s clothes, inhale her scent, and sleepover at her house! Despite her lucky break, something lurks outside that might not make her to be as lucky as she thinks!
The Characters
To be honest, there isn’t much in the way of development in this volume. Michiru is still Michiru. For whatever unexplained reason, she still has a deep infatuation with Miko and it’s getting to levels creepier than the monsters that Miko can see. Although, it did make for some pretty hilarious moments throughout the volume.
Then, we have Yoh. As much as Michiru is obsessed with Miko, Yoh is ten times more obsessed with Michiru… which is rather disturbing because they are sisters. Yoh bathes with Michiru, dresses her, puts her to bed, wants to know every little detail about her life, and even demands that she keeps her GPS on so that she can track her! You know, totally normal sister behavior. She’s also Michiru’s agent for her modeling career so to say that she’s involved in every aspect of Michiru’s life is an understatement. Yeah… pretty creepy.
Final Thoughts
To be honest, this was a bit of a slow volume with not much happening. We continued Michiru’s infatuation with Miko and we learned that it runs in the family with Yoh. Outside of that, the volume was rather uneventful. Of course, the most interesting part was Miko taking pictures of Michiru in order to show them to Rom whenever she gets the chance. I kind of wish that would have happened in this volume as it would have added some spice to it but I guess we’ll see if that happens in Volume 10.
I wish I could elaborate further but that’s all this volume was… Yoh’s introduction, Michiru sucking at school… and a study session with some humor in between. Hopefully, it will be a bit more eventful next time around but this felt more like a filler volume than actual progression.
