Sea of Stars Local Coop Mode is in Development

By Keith MitchellMarch 14, 2024

Sabotage Studio, the same developer that brought the world the Sea of Stars RPG (and The Messenger) to the world, made a pretty damn big announcement as of yet. A new local coop mode, dubbed “Single-Player+,” is being developed for the popular indie RPG.

This mode allows three players to journey together in Sea of Stars,” “Staying true to the game’s core turn-based roots, each player will engage in traversal and combat with a new ‘co-op timed hits’ mechanic as they embark with friends on Sea of Stars‘ grand adventure, said by Sabotage Studio in a press release.

There’s no release date for this massive undertaking, the announcement instantly conjured up memories of me playing Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) when it was first released for the Super Nintendo. You could say that Secret of Mana pretty much wrote the book on local coop RPG goodness, seeing how it allowed multiple players to drop in and out at any time—and this was back in 1993!

Oh, of course, I’m getting ahead of myself. While the new coop mode is being worked on, no specifics have been released yet. But that won’t stop me from envisioning what it will be like.

While this Sea of Stars Single-Player+ mode won’t include any online coop, which I’m sure will upset many fans of Sea of Stars, just seeing a local coop mode being worked on shows how much Sabotage Studio cares about this gem of an RPG. Now, the hard part is waiting and then trying to get two other people to come over to my house to play it with me… or maybe use Steam Remote Play or Parsec for PC.

Sea of Stars is available on the PS4, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC. Be sure to read our Sea of Stars review, as we thought it was an amazing RPG crafted with love and showed respect to the 16-bit RPGs that came before it.
