Riot’s Fighting Game Renamed to 2XKO, The Internet is Not Amused

I'm not loving the new name

For years, Riot Games’ upcoming 2v2 tag-based fighting game based in the League of Legends universe, with the Cannon Brothers at the helm, was called Project L. So long that everyone accepted it as the official name, despite it being a temporary name. But now, Riot has given the game an official name, 2XKO.

No, this isn’t a joke.

Along with the name change, Tom Cannon, who serves as the Executive Proper on the development of 2XKO, explains why the new name and an updated roadmap for the title. Per Tom, the game is entering a new development phase, and the team has grown in number, but there’s still a lot to figure out.

Due to this, 2XKO will be available to play at multiple big fighting game events, starting with EVO Japan 2024 in April. At-home playtesting is also on the roadmap. The platforms have been nailed down, with 2XKO heading to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Anyone interested in being on the 2XKO mailing list should head to Play2XKO.com. Here, you can sign up for upcoming playtests.

Personally, I’m not a fan of that name change, and apparently, nor is the rest of the internet, especially the fighting game community. Some have stated that the name is boring and is perhaps one of the worst games for a game, ranking right up there with Elon Musk’s decision to rebrand Twitter to X.

Regardless, as long as the game plays well and brings something new to the fighting game genre, maybe the name change isn’t all that bad… Right?
