Nintendo President Says Super Mario Bros Wonder Sales Were Faster Than Previous 2D Entries

By Todd BlackFebruary 10, 2024
Super Mario Bros Wonder Review

From the moment Super Mario Bros Wonder was announced, gamers were curious about how different it would be and how it would play thanks to the “Wonder Effect.” As I noted in my review, it was truly a marvel and one of the best 2D Mario titles EVER! Then, as Nintendo revealed earlier in the week, their efforts to make the game stand out resulted in the title selling 12 million units in under three months!

As Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa noted in the investor briefing, Super Mario Bros Wonder didn’t just sell well; it sold at a faster rate than previous 2D entries:

“Sales of Super Mario Bros. Wonder have grown at a faster pace than previous Super Mario titles. The game itself has been well-received in terms of its content, but I think another factor is that it is a title that can be played by two or more people. Around half of the people who play this game do so in multiplayer mode, so I think the title suited the need for a game that many people can enjoy with family and friends during the year-end holiday season, when people get together.”

He also felt that the Super Mario Bros Movie helped catapult sales as the film came out to own before the Switch title debuted! All in all, it’ll be interesting to see how Nintendo builds off of this success with their next system.
