Square Enix’s 4v4 Shooter Foamstars Heads to PlayStation Plus Next Month

Square Enix’s upcoming 4v4 Shooter, Foamstars, now has a release date and is headed directly to PlayStation Plus next month. According to the company, the title will be released on February 6, 2024, and launched on PlayStation Plus, where it can be played from day one up to March 4, 2024, for all tiers of PlayStation Plus.

After that, anyone who wants to continue playing the game will have to purchase it for $30. Per Square Enix, Foamstars will receive several season updates for the first year of release. Each season also includes an optional premium seasonal pass that will unlock several characters and season-specific cosmetics for $6.

Foamstars is a PVE and PVP multiplayer game and includes gameplay modes that will be available at launch, including Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival, Rubber Duck Party,  and solo/team-based PvE experiences, where players are tasked with protecting Bath Vegas from a series of randomized encounters. Each mode has three randomized maps that are expertly designed to intensify the gameplay experience and deliver original, fun experiences that will differ with every match.

More Foamstars in action for the PS5

While we haven’t had any personal experience with the game, I have spoken with several people who have, and the impressions have been split. Some enjoyed Square Enix’s soap buddle-packed team-based shooter, stating that they enjoyed the chemistry and charisma of the shooter. Others were unimpressed with the shooting mechanics and felt that the game was nothing more than a blatant copy of Nintendo’s long-running Splatoon series. We’ll reserve our opinion until we get some hands-on experience to decide, and you should, too.

This makes this the second title that was supposedly headed to the PlayStation 5 as a standard title but ended up on PlayStation Plus. The other is Destruction Allstars, which failed to impress or gain traction despite being available on the subscription service. Whether or not the same fate is slated for Foamstars will be decided once the game is released.
