BEEMAI Dark Souls series 3 Review – Quite the Disappointment

These aren't the cool Dark Souls toys thar you want

As the resident Soulslike fan here at this lovely establishment, I always look for cool Soulslike stuff to display in my office. Not that I don’t need more, but I digress. While browsing Amazon recently, I discovered some new Dark Souls collectibles in the BEEMAI Dark Souls series 3. This series comprises six different collectibles: Minic, Lucatiel, Banpresto Faraam, Sir Alonne, Shanalotte, and Desert Pyromancer, and comes with a catch. You’ll never know which of the six you’ll get.

You can purchase a single box, a 3-piece set, or the entire 6-piece set. However, since this is a blind box deal, just because you purchased three or the entire set doesn’t exactly mean you’ll get all the figurines. You could be unlucky and get three of the same character, which would be terrible but would sound just right with my luck. Normally, I’m not a betting person, but the thrill of seeing if I could beat the odds was too great, and I purchased the 3-piece set.

After a few days, I received my package and dove into the BEEMAI Dark Souls series 3. Right off the top, the box looks cool. It’s definitely something that Dark Souls fans would appreciate, as it matches the theme, and there’s the Faraam Knight front and center. However, the box did leave me a bit confused as it says these were produced by Firelink. Firelink? Who is that? I thought these were produced by BEEMAI.

Opening up the boxes, I did manage to beat the odds, as I didn’t get any duplicates. Despite that, I didn’t get the Faraam Knight, which was a bummer. I ended up with the Minic, Shanalotte, and Desert Pyromancer, and I only cared about one out of the three. Each figurine also has a card showing the character on the front, the Dark Souls logo on the back, and a stand.

They’re way smaller than I expected from seeing them on Amazon, each standing close to 4 inches and no taller than most of Nintendo’s Amiibos, which is disappointing given how much this costs. But the kicker is upon placing the collectibles onto the stands, the peg on the foot of the Mimic broke off, and I barely put any force on it. Given how much I paid for these, I was not expecting that to happen. Yes, I get it; this sort of thing does happen, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to be upset about it.

There’s not much to say about these. While they are simple yet quite detailed, although I noticed some painting flaws on the maiden, they aren’t what one would expect given what I paid. These are akin to the knickknacks you’d find at Gamestop or Spencer’s, piled up near the register, attempting to convince you to pick some up on your way out. And those are a few dollars at most. For the 3-piece set, I paid $60 USD, and now that I have them in my hands, I feel these should be at least $20 cheaper. The more I think about it, the more frustrated I get because it feels like I was taken advantage of.

If you come across these for sale and think picking them up would be worth your money, don’t do it. Not unless you manage to get them for a few dollars. Soulslike and Dark Souls fans can do much better than what BEEMAI or whoever this company is asking for. As for me, these are headed back to Amazon so I can spend my money on something worth the asking price.
