Hyperkin’s Mega 95 Handheld Device Plays Sega Genesis Carts

Is this a shrunk down MegaRetroN HD?
By Keith MitchellJanuary 10, 2024

If you loved their Sega Genesis, but somehow it disappeared from your ownership (Like me), or it was too late to get one but wanted to, then Hyperkin has something for you called the Mega 95. The Mega 95 is an upcoming handheld device designed to play Sega Genesis/Mega Drive cartridges.

The Mega 95 has a 5-inch display that can be switched between a 4:3 and 16:9 ratio and has a battery that Hyperkin says will last about 10 hours. This is basically a souped-up Sega Nomad, a device that was revolutionary for its time and isn’t something that you can walk into a store and purchase.Hyperkin Mega 95 prototype image 1

The device is shaped like the 6-button Sega Genesis controller with a screen in the middle. There will also be an available USB-C dock that can be purchased to let you connect up to the original Sega Genesis or Mega Drive controllers to the Mega 95 while also being able to connect it to TV/Monitor. It feels like Hyperkin took its MegaRetroN HD retro device and shrunk it down.

Hyperkin hasn’t provided any information on what sort of emulation the Mega 95 uses, and we’ve contacted the company to get more information regarding it. There is no release date or pricing for the Mega 95. But if you’re a retro gamer, you may want to keep your eyes on this.

This isn’t the first time that Hyperkin has done this with a classic gaming device, and not too long ago, it released the Supaboy Portable Pocket Console, which is a handheld version of the Super NES/Super Famicom.  If the Mega 95 performs anything like this one, we’re all in for a treat.
