How to open the Baldur’s Gate 3 Reithway Tollhouse safe

By Keith MitchellOctober 3, 2023

In Baldur’s Gate 3, once you’ve made your way past Gerringothe Thorm, located on the second floor of the Reithway Tollhouse, you’ll find a safe that is a massive pain when trying to open it. Attempting to open it will require a massive 30-dice roll, which isn’t possible. So, how do you open this safe?

Read on to find out.

Opening the Reithway Tollhouse safe

This safe located in the tollhouse is unlike any safe you’ve experienced. It can not be lockpicked; if you’ve already attempted it, you already know. So how do you open it? Well, it’s all about chance.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Opening the safe door

To open this safe, you must pass a perception check once you walk into the room where the safe is located. This is the only way to open this safe. You should save before you walk into the room to save you some trouble. If you fail the perception check, you can load up your game and try again. If you weren’t already aware, perception rolls are one and done. If you fail, you can’t try again unless you reload your game.

Trying to open the safe door failing the perception check is nearly impossible, as you’ll have to roll a 30 on the dice. Well, I shouldn’t say it’s impossible, but you will need a lot of bonuses and additional proficiencies, and some luck to do it. That’s all a pain; passing a perception check may be your best bet.

If you managed to pass the perception check, you’d notice a letter attached to the wall.

In this letter, you’ll see a plea from someone trying to hide from the Shadow Curse. In doing so, they locked themselves in the safe. That’s not a very smart idea if you ask me.

While the letter says the combination to unlock the safe is below, there isn’t. Instead, you need to head to the safe door, which can now be opened. Inside the safe, you’ll find the body of the poor soul who locked themselves inside the safe.

If you were looking for loot or rewards, there aren’t any. Just the body.

That’s all you need to do to open the safe door. But since there’s nothing inside worth getting, maybe avoid this process altogether.
