Here it comes North America. Sony’s PlayStation TV (formerly known as PSVita TV), a device which had a rocky start is almost upon us and honestly I can’t wait for this. Retailing for $99.99 for a standalone version, which works for those who already had a few DualShock 3 controllers and a laying around or $139.99 for a bundle that also includes (1) DualShock 3 controller, an 8GB PSVita memory card (Still too damned small) and The LEGO Movie game. Word is that there will be a limited edition run that will include Sly Cooper: Theives as well for just $139.99. But I’m sure everyone knows about this already.
Now if you’re wondering why anyone would want this, let me educate you. The PlayStation TV will enable you to enjoy PS One, PSP, PS Vita and PlayStation 3 games via PS Now (so yes you will need a subscription). So all you retro gamers and others who missed out on some grand games of the past, this is definitely a perk. Oh did I also mention that if you have a PlayStation 4 that you’ll be able to stream games from it to the PlayStation TV, just like you can with the PS Vita now but with a wired connection which makes for a better experience. A definite plus if you have your location wired for 100/1000 speeds, you should have a lag-free or almost connection. You get all that for just $99.99.
I was worried that this device wouldn’t make it over here, Thank You for listening Sony. I can’t wait to get my hands on one since all my consoles are located in my “ManCave” and this enables me to get my game on in the living room/bedroom/kids bedroom.While Sony hasn’t put out any videos showing the system and jhow it works I’ll just leave you with a video that TGN put out a few months ago. Check it out, especially if you’re remotely interested in the system.
That said there is a limitation to be aware of , the system only supports 720p/1080i and stereo sound so no 1080p/surround sound. So if you planned on using this as a video streaming you’re going to be disappointed as other set-top boxes will outclass the PlayStation TV for digital content consumption. But to be fair this was made to stream games not watch movies or listen to music.
I don’t know about you all but I’m geeking out with the thought of finally playing Darius Burst: Another Chroniclet on my TV now, since I never was able to play it in the arcades. Sadly there is no word on if this is region locked or not.
