When playing CI Games and Hexworks Lords of the Fallen (2023), there’s an item called the Umbral Scouring that comes in handy, as it is a unique currency in the game and is helpful if you want to get access to boss armors, weapons, spells, and other items from Molhu, the Umbral vendor located at the Skyrest hub. However, there are only a handful of ways to acquire Umbral Scouring, and in this guide, I’ll outline how to fill your pockets with them.
Where To Find Umbral Scouring
There are a few ways to find the Umbral Scouring; thankfully, two are fairly straightforward.
The first is entering the Umbral world and interacting with the Umbral Echoes, which you’ll find as you progress through the game. These are NPC conversations that tell story bits and lore; they’ll also reward you with two Umbral Scourings just for listening. The downside is that they are only accessible in Umbral form and scattered throughout the world. The good thing is that you’ll know that you’re near one as you’ll see a group of blue moths converging in a spot, which is a hint to drop into the Umbral world and check it out. You’ll also get them after most boss kills, as there will be an interaction if you are in Umbral form as well.
The Putrid Mother, located at Skyrest, also sells Umbral Scourings, but it will cost you 3x Plucked Eyeballs for each Umbral Scouring you purchase. The Plucked Eyeballs can be earned by avenging the deaths of other players you’ll find while playing the game.
This is the easiest and fastest way to earn Umbral Scourings.
After defeating bosses, these will also drop Umbral Scourings. And given that there are 30 bosses in the entire game, there are quite a few to acquire from them.
The absolute worst way to get Umbral Scourings is to fight the Scarlet Shadow, also known as the Red Reaper. This enemy is unique to the Umbral world and will only arrive after you’ve been in the Umbral world for an extended amount of time; the Umbral meter that is located in the upper right-hand of your screen will turn red. Once this happens, the Scarlet Shadow/Red Reaper will hunt you down, and you’ll know when it’s near as you’ll see a red shadow on the ground, hearing towards you, and it’s not a nice time.
This enemy is easily more potent than most bosses you’ve encountered or will encounter, and it blocks your ability to heal. It has a deadly lunging attack that takes off a nice chuck of your health. It can teleport out of your attacks and has lots of health. I wouldn’t attempt to fight this enemy unless you’ve gotten some stronger gear, weapons, and spells.
But if you should defeat the Scarlet Shadow/Red Reaper, it will be worth the effort as it drops 5x Umbral Scourings and a nice amount of Vigor. Now, while it is possible to cheese this enemy, Hexworks, the developer of Lords of the Fallen, has been making it harder and harder. It’s as if they want you to work for it.
