Tears of the Kingdom Director Reflects On Zelda Timeline

By Todd BlackSeptember 8, 2023
Tears of the Kingdom

Many people are out there enjoying The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. The title is a Game of the Year contender without question and easily the highlight of Nintendo’s 2023. The game has a nice story, deep gameplay mechanics, tons of quests to do, and more. But when you look at it from the franchise perspective, it’s one of the few games in the series to directly have a “known place” in the timeline. If you don’t know, The Legend of Zelda doesn’t have one “true” timeline; instead, it breaks off, kind of like a multiverse.

And so when the director of Tears of the Kingdom, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, was asked by Famitsu (with his answers translated by Nintendo Everything) about how the timeline plays out in this game and what comes next, here’s what he had to say:

“It is definitely a story after Breath of the Wild. After that, basically, we are thinking about how not to break the story and world of The Legend of Zelda. Those are the two points I can say at this point in time.

I think if it doesn’t collapse, fans can have the space to wonder various things like “So that means that is possible?”. If we only speak of the possibilities, if there is the story of Hyrule’s founding, it is also possible that Hyrule has collapsed in its history once before. I don’t randomly make things by saying “Isn’t it interesting if we did this here?”, so even for the parts we did not tell, I hope you enjoy imagining it.”

We know that the team is already looking at the next entry since Eiji Aonuma admitted that there would be no DLC for the title. So now the question is, “Where are we going next?
