Beta Update Finally Brings Atmos Support to the PS5

By Keith MitchellJuly 31, 2023
PS5 Dolby Support

The PlayStation 5 is finally getting Dolby Atmos Support via a beta update. The PlayStation blog has revealed that a new update for the PlayStation 5 is being rolled out, including several UI enhancements, new accessibility, and audio options, which add Dolby Atmos support. While there’s no ETA on when this update will be rolled out to everyone else, I can’t begin to tell you how long I’ve waited for this update.

Before this, if you wanted 3D Audio support on the PS5, you were restricted to proprietary Sony 3D audio technology called Tempest 3D Audio. At first, it was only available for Headsets, but eventually, Sony added 3D Audio for TV speakers using virtualization, and it didn’t work very well. I can tell you I had many issues trying to get it to work, and I eventually gave up on using it.

If you’re in this beta, you can enable Atmos support by going to Settings –> Sound –> Audio Output –> Audio Format (Priority) and then selecting Dolby Atmos.

Sadly, I didn’t get picked for this beta, so I can’t tell you how it works on Atmos-enabled hardware. But if you did, please do me a favor and let me know how it works in the comments.

When the PS5 and Xbox Series X were released, I updated my gaming room’s sound system, ensuring it would fully support Atmos. While Xbox embraced the tech, PlayStation had been promising it would eventually incorporate Atmos. After years of waiting, it’s finally here.

Though, I still wonder why Sony went with its proprietary Sony 3D audio instead of using something multiple audio product manufacturers have already embraced.
