Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne Finally Gets a Release Date

In 2021, Netflix announced it was working on continuing its Castlevania animated series. Today, we received the first teaser of this new show, Castlevania: Nocturne, and damn, it looks fantastic. We won’t have to wait much longer as the show will premiere this September 28 on Netflix.

This show will tell the tale of Richter Belmont, a descendant of Sypha Belnades and Trevor Belmont of the original Castlevania animated series. As well as another character called Maria Renard, who, in the games, is a distant relative of Richter. Both characters should be familiar to fans of the Castlevania games, as Richter and Maria are related (she’s adopted) and also appeared in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.

The new setting of this new show is France during the French Revolution, so we’re going to see a chance location. The plot of this new show is under wraps, but we do get a hint of things to come.  I do wonder if we’ll see any of the original characters during the show being mentioned as flashbacks. Or maybe we’ll see Alucurd make an appearance, given that he is an immortal being.

We can see a few new players in the trailer, but we don’t know who they are. But we know they are vampires, and one has a score to settle with Richter, as his mother killed someone he loved. So, he kills Richter’s mother in return and threatens Richter. I don’t see how any of that is going to stand.

When the show was announced, it was stated that the animation quality would be improved from the original show, and after watching this teaser a few times, they weren’t kidding. Powerhouse Animation, responsible for Netflix’s Castlevania, Master of the Universe: Revelation (check out our review of season 1 and season 2), and Blood of Zeus, has stepped its game up, and it shows.

But don’t take my word for it. Check out the teaser for yourself.

I can only hope that this show will be as adult-themed and full of suspenseful storytelling as the original show was. But given that Warren Ellis is attached to the show, we shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne will debut on Netflix on September 28, 2023.
