Throwback Attack: The Sega Saturn and X-men vs Street Fighter

By Keith MitchellAugust 23, 2014

Ah, I can fondly remember playing X-Men vs Street Fighter on the Sega Saturn like it was yesterday. Come to think of it, it was yesterday. I recently went down into what I call the vault which is a box filled with games and consoles from the yesteryear’s, looking to see what I could reclaim from the Time Keeper (The wife) and I stumbled across this gem from the past. I quickly tossed it into my bag and ran out of there as fast as my legs could carry me. I think I saw a SNES looking at me, longingly.

Fun Fact: If you wanted an arcade quality 2-D fighter then the Sega Saturn was your system of choice, that is if you didn’t mind the hefty price that was incurred when importing the titles. But if you didn’t then you were host to some of the 2-D best fighters of that era or even of all time.

  • Street Fighter Alpha / Zero 2 and 3
  • Darkstalkers, Vampire Hunter and Vampire Savior
  • X-Men vs Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter
  • X-men Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes
  • Street Fighter Collection Capcom Generations 5 (This was a 2-disc set that included arcade perfect versions of Super Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2X and Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold), Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II′: Champion Edition (Street Fighter II Dash) and Street Fighter II′ Turbo: Hyper Fighting (Street Fighter II Dash Turbo)
  • King of Fighters ’95, ’96, and ’97.
  • Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness
  • Pocket Fighters
  • Guardian Heroes

Those are just the ones I can recall as I either owned them still own them but are lost in the vault somewhere or I’ve played at one point or another. And playing X-Men vs Street Fighter was just as fun now as it was back then, it’s without a doubt one of my favorite fighting games.

Next time I sneak back into the vault I’ll have to stay and snag that Sega Dreamcast that I saw in the corner of my eye as I was running for dear life.
