The Story

Volume 15 of Boruto takes us into the aftermath of Isshiki’s defeat. We know that Code is seeking revenge on Naruto and Sasuke for killing Isshiki; however, we now know how he will get that revenge. He went to one of Boro’s hideouts and despite being members of the same group, Code is deemed as kill on sight. That didn’t really make much sense but, nevertheless, Code gets in through force and meets Bug, a caretaker of Boro’s secret chambers. He instructs Bug to lead him down where he opens a capsule containing an android that was supposed to have been disposed of via Jigen’s orders.

In the capsule is Eida, a woman who has the power of clairvoyance as well as the ability to capture nearly any person’s heart. The only hearts she cannot capture are those related to her by blood or hearts belonging to the Otsutsuki Clan. Code ends up falling under spell and becomes enthralled with her; however, he’s fully aware it’s her ability. Eida cannot see into the past beyond when she was born nor can she see the future, but she can see everything in the present no matter where they are in the world.

Meanwhile, Kawaki and Boruto begin training so that they can get stronger to face Code. Kawaki has a far-fetched plan to help Boruto with his Karma; however, it’s going to take a LOT of powering up because Code may have limiters on him now but if they are removed, he will become stronger than Jigen! This leads to a rather quick spar between Boruto and Kawaki. Afterward, Amado makes a suggestion to Kawaki that doesn’t sit right with him. Because of this suggestion, there are now concerns that Amado is up to something.

Lastly, we revisit Eida and Code making their preparations. Eida suggests unlocking another capsule that contains her “knight.” Here, we meet Daemon… a young kid who has a really strong power. If someone’s killing intent allows them to even think of a method to kill, Daemon can reflect that vision and use that killing method on that person. The stronger the killing method, the strong Daemon’s power is. Code, Eida, and Daemon are now free to do as they please and they are about to make their move!

Characters

Kawaki is still a mixed bag of emotions. He clearly wants to help protect Naruto for everything that he’s done for him; however, he still seems to have trouble connecting with Boruto and the rest of Team 7. It seems as if he wants to do all of this on his own but he realizes that it’s not possible and cannot accept it. That’s why when Amado made him an offer, I was sure he was going to take it but even with his goals, he still refused. I wonder just how long he’s going to refuse, though… especially since he wanted to fast-track their training.

Well… now we know Amado is up to something but what that something remains to be seen. Everything has been too convenient and, of course, he is a member of Kara. I wouldn’t think someone from an organization such as that would switch sides so conveniently. I don’t know what he’s up to but as long as he doesn’t become another Black Zetsu reason for everything-type character, I’ll be fine with it.

Eida is an interesting new character. Despite her abilities, she’s a pacifist; however, I wonder just how much of that is actually true. Her ability to spy on anyone at any time in the world is a bit of an annoyance; however, she seems pretty relaxed and confident in herself. Definitely a laid-back character!

She is the complete opposite of Daemon, though. However, I do have to say that if you’ve seen one character like Daemon, you’ve seen them all. Just a young brat with a bloodthirsty demeanor. We’ve seen this type over and over again. I’m willing to be his immaturity will end up being his downfall! In fact, I can already see how they beat him because they’ve already shown us the solution in Ghostbusters. If you think of J. Edgar Hoover, then J. Edgar Hoover will appear and destroy you. Just empty your head!

Final Thoughts

While this can be seen as a transitional volume from one arc to the next, it didn’t completely take its foot off the gas. While the pacing did slow down, we were still given a lot of interesting information to set up the Code arc. There are now multiple scenarios on the table rather than just one clear-cut goal which is something this series needed. To have multiple outcomes from one story arc is rather interesting so I’d like to see how this is all going to play out.

While Eida is a nice addition, I’m not too crazy about Daemon. Code, who seemed cold and driven now suddenly has a bit of a personality. Yes, it does add a new dimension to his character but it’s a bit goofy. His being in love while realizing it’s just Eida’s ability adds a level of subtle humor that doesn’t really fit him but I guess it kind of works. It’s a bit weird… so weird that I can see this as the plot device that ends up taking him down. After all, Code promised not to hurt Kawaki but what happens if he accidentally does while making an attempt on Naruto’s life? What would that do for his “relationship” with Eida? It’s a bit predictable but I guess we’ll have to wait and see if that really pans out.

Another good volume! Lots of interesting things to follow up on!
