‘The Fridge is Red’ Delivers PS1-Inspired Scares to PC Next Month

By Andrew AgressAugust 25, 2022
The Fridge is Red

The Fridge is Red, a horror anthology with retro visuals, will get dropped off on Steam on September 27th. Developed by 5WORD Team and published by tinyBuild, the title takes inspiration from analogue horror of the 90s with its tale of a mysterious refrigerator of the scarlet variety.  And what terrors does this fridge hold?

Players take on the role of Frank, who fixes home appliances as a side job to make ends meet. One day, a red fridge gets dropped off and deemed unfixable. Or perhaps it’s haunted. Okay, the fridge is almost definitely haunted. Currently, you can see just how frightening the kitchen appliance is with a demo of the game on Steam.  The demo draws from DO NOT TAKE YOUR EYES AWAY FROM THE RED FRIDGE, the 2020 5WORD Team’s acclaimed Epic MegaJam entry.  The full title with the mystery of the fridge plus five other stories will arrive next month.

I enjoy seeing more horror anthology games developed, since lengthy titles can struggle to maintain consistent scares for their duration. Anthologies can achieve the level of scares that shorter titles deliver while keeping them fresh through a variety of premises. In The Fridge is Red, 5WORD promises that each chapter will explore different themes and gameplay ideas.

The developers describe the game uniquely, stating, “Our game is horror with some elements of violence. For example, if you lose a level, the character gets eaten by a refrigerator. There will be such elements throughout the game.”

Players can currently wishlist The Fridge is Red on Steam for PC. The first person horror anthology game will then arrive complete with six full chapters. No word yet on whether the PlayStation 1-inspired title will arrive on a PlayStation console, but here’s hoping it does. Until then, we can appreciate the callback of the lo-fi aesthetics from this creepy kitchen appliance.
