The next entry of Disgaea is revealed. Disgaea 7 is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5 in Japan in 2023. Yup, for now, this is only heading to Japan.
This time around, the theme is ancient Japan. More specifically, in the Meji Restoration period of the late 1800s. The netherworld, this time, is named the “Hinomoto Netherworld Cluster.” The game focus on love-hating lone samurai by the name of Fuji. His description states that he is a “demon-like” demon who is “poor”, loves money, and is lazy. He is allergic to human-like expressions and has to cough up blood whenever he feels human emotions like love, friendship, and sympathy. Similar to the beginning characteristics of Disgaea’s original main character of Laharl. It is focused on the characters of them fighting through the world in order to regain their lost Bushido.
The game will be directed by Shunske Minowa, who worked on Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengenace. Naturally, character designer Takehito Harada will be returning to create the design that has been iconic throughout the games. It has been said that the game is to retain many elements that fans love in the series. Like the over-the-top characters and story and the traditional SRPG system.
Though it seems that they are continuing with the 3D models like when they debuted in Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. While I don’t mind the continuation of 3D models, here is hoping they have learned from the lessons of the last game and improved since then. While a logical step, there were elements in the last game that felt empty and that something was lost. Here is hoping that there is an option for the traditional 2D sprite models and overall improvements in other aspects. You can read our review of Disgaea 6 here.
A new mechanic that was introduced in the trailer is Dodeka Max mode. In which a character becomes Kaiju-sized and can attack multiple targets outside the map area. Also shown is item reincarnation, in which weapons and items can be strengthened through the reincarnation system. This was available in past games when strengthening characters.
As of right now, only Japan will be getting the game in January 2023. No word yet if it will be coming to the West, but we will update you of any changes from NISA.
