The Story

Volume eight of For the Kid I Saw in My Dreams takes a bit of a divergence from the “Kazuto finding mission” and reveals to us a shocking (or rather predictable) revelation about who the Copy Cat Three Eyes killer is (the one who has been impersonating Kazuto).

Senri tracks down members of Mask Man’s gang and engages them in an information exchange. After a heated discussion, he lives up to his part of the bargain and shows them a photo of The Rat (aka the Fire Man). With this new information in hand, they end up theorizing who the Copy Cat really is. Once it all makes sense, they reach out to a woman named Tajimi who I will keep to a vague description to avoid spoilers.

Senri, Enan, and Tajimi end up working together by investigating the murders caused by Three Eyes and Fire Man; however, due to the information they discovered, they realized that Three Eyes is not with Fire Man but rather Copy Cat has taken Three Eyes’ place and has been using Kazuto’s calling cards to keep up the façade that Three Eyes is committing the murders.

Meanwhile, we get some more background information on Wakazono as well as some possible information on what Kazuto is doing now that he has separated from Fire Man. We also got some background information and motives behind Copy Cat’s actions which ties a lot of the mysteries together. The volume ends with a surprise appearance of Kazuto sporting a brand-new look.

Characters

There wasn’t much in the way of huge developments when it came to the growth of our characters with the exception of Wakazono. Even though we knew some of his backstory before, it became a little more fleshed out which reinforced his obsession with finding the Fire Man. In fact, to walk the fine line of slight spoilers, the extra information given to us is that Wakazono had already found Fire Man… but not in the present. I’ll leave it at that but now we know what Wakazono is so dedicated to his job as a police officer. It also sets up another face-to-face between him and Fire Man which makes things much more interesting.

Ever since the revelation that Kazuto has a child, this volume cements the fact that he is trying to turn to honest work to be a model father. Plus, we all know that the bullet inside his head isn’t going to give him much longer to live. It’s almost as if he’s setting up his child for a future absent of hardships. When Senri discovers this, he understands why in one of his dreams Kazuto felt happy.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to talk about this volume without spoiling much because there were some MAJOR reveals in this volume. With the ending to the series announced in Japan, I can see why things are starting to heat up. There’s a lot to still cover but it seems as if the chapters on some of our characters are definitely coming to a close soon.

Senri is becoming more and more like a top-notch detective as is Enan; however, I highly doubt he’s ever going to join the police force. This is still all about personal matters to him as he doesn’t care about anything else than finding and protecting Kazuto and getting revenge on the Fire Man. After we saw a bit more of Wakazono’s past, Senri has some stiff competition when it comes to getting his revenge. Now we have Mask Man’s gang looking for Fire Man (or Rat as he’s known to them) as well as Copy Cat to avenge their fallen boss. It’s like a three-way race but I do know one thing… if you’re Fire Man, you’re screwed about six ways from Sunday.

Who is going to get to him first? That’s the big hook this volume set up and I can’t wait to see the outcome of this morbid race.
