Square Enix’s Forspoken Has Been Delayed to Early 2023

It would appear that things aren’t going well for the development cycle for Square Enix’s Forspoken. Initially scheduled to be released on May 24, 2022, and then delayed to October 11, 2022. Now, the game has received yet another delay, as Square Enix has announced that Forspoken has moved to a January 24, 2023, release date.

According to Square Enix, Forspoken is just now entering its final development stage and are working on polishing up the game.

Forspoken delay Jan 2023

The question likely on everyone’s minds is, why did they announce two different release dates already? Sadly, the current status of the world, and the pandemic doesn’t make developmental work any easier. Even still, I’ve been a fan of now announcing a release date until the game has gone gold and the game is ready to be released.

And if I’m being honest, the recent b-roll we saw of Forspoken in action didn’t look too hot. Sure, we don’t know how far along that footage was, but if you’re showing off your new game, wouldn’t you want to show it as its best? More development time can only do wonders for the game. Still, I hope this doesn’t hurt Square Enix’s release table and, more importantly, its money.

Of course, this also could be due to Santa Monica Studio finally providing a release date for its upcoming masterpiece, God of War Ragnar, which happens to have a November 9th, 2022, release date. I can’t see why Square Enix would even want to compete with God of War Ragnarok, so delaying Forspoken to the following year is a smart move.

Forspoken is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by Luminous Productions and published by Square Enix. The game follows the story of Frey Holland, who mysteriously finds herself being transported into the fantasy world of Athia, along with possessing magical powers.

Forspoken is a PlayStation console exclusive for five years but will see a PC/Windows release date, alongside the PlayStation 5 release.
