Anime First Reaction: Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall

By Josh PiedraApril 5, 2022

It’s been (one week… ok, sorry) a decade since I saw the original Black Rock Shooter. When I saw that a new series was coming, I was like “Oh HEY! I remember that!” Honestly? I don’t remember much about the original series (you expect me to remember something from TEN YEARS ago? I can’t even remember what I did earlier today!) But I figured I would give it a whirl because it had a really cute main character with my favorite combination of blue eyes and black hair! Did this do anything to jolt my memories?

Let’s Go!

First Episode Synopsis

Picture it. San Francisco… 2065…

Well, you can’t because none of us have actually been there yet but the world hasn’t exactly fared too well. Long story short… Skynet happened. Robots are attacking humans, the world is a wasteland, and the one person who can stop it all… Re-l Mey— Black Rock Shooter is asleep in a liquid tube ala Neo in The Matrix Resurrections. But that’s okay because the tube drains, she wakes up, and everyone has their empress back!

Except she has amnesia.

Go figure.

Our favorite alternate universe counterpart to Kuroi is back and she’s slowly remembering how to use a gun… and how to touch things and turn her arm into a cannon… and slowly I’m starting to remember what this series was about.

Fighting happens, the military squad that helped her dies except for their Captain because his unique design proved he was important over the other look-a-like cannon fodder side characters who weren’t even given any names.

Just when the main boss of the first level shows up to send us into the ending credits (with a kick-ass opening posing as an ending theme), we need that hook to get us to watch Episode 2… and lo and behold, Strength appears! HEY! I remember her, too!

Worth Watching?

MAYBE – I will fully admit it. I remember watching Black Rock Shooter. I don’t remember being too invested into it, therefore, after a decade, I don’t remember jack squat about it. I do remember some of the cool characters, the cool fights, and the weird fact that it bounced between slice-of-life high school girls becoming friends hooha and these wicked post-apocalyptic world, hi-tech battles. I do remember that they were separate universes and the actions in one reflected on the other.

I don’t remember much after that… so I kind of feel like Black Rock Shooter (or do I just call her AU Kuroi?) in the sense that I can’t remember much and I’ll probably slowly remember everything as I watch the show. The first episode wasn’t bad… it kept me engaged and it was pretty interesting. It’s like discovering this series all over again which is pretty cool but since this anime doesn’t really live in my memories, I can’t really give this a solid watch or pass.

I guess just do what I’m doing. Check it out. If you like it, watch it. If you don’t.. then, well… don’t watch it. Unless you’re one of those people who watches garbage to either complain about it on social media like a little turd or you get off on self-punishment.

Don’t worry.

I don’t judge…

…much.
