The Story
The bulk of volume five centers around Framea wanting to expand her guidebook to also cover things for nobles and women to do. When Veldora and Ramiris hear of this, they take her on an expensive tour of noble life by renting out a whole castle, a whole hot spring, buying expensive outfits, and even throwing themselves a parade! Of course, they end up getting scolded when they get back but this one-off opening chapter leads to something a bit bigger.
Their flaunting affairs have reached the ears of other, smaller nations. A group of nations assembled some merchants and they travel to Tempest in order to attempt to enter in some sort of partnership to help further the lands. They come across Framea and try different hilarious methods to try and swoon her… all so they could meet with Rimuru, who they are, yet, unaware of.
Rimuru eventually hears of it and meets them in person. His identity as the demon lord eventually gets spilled and the merchants’ tones change on a dime. Negotiations begin but Rimuru wishes to start things off a bit more slowly so it all worked out in the end.
Characters
I really liked how Veldora and Ramiris went nuts with the high society life with no regard whatsoever for Rimuru’s credit limit. Then again, how does the one and only credit card in an isekai even have a credit limit? How does it even have a bank!?
It’s nice that Framea wants to broaden the guidebook a bit which shows her thoughtfulness but she is a bit too trusting… although it really seemed as if she were leading the merchants on the entire time. Even though they were making obvious advances towards her, she accepted their invitations to their lands just because she selfishly wanted to travel and see more places. Beneath the smile is a bit of a mischievous woman!
Final Word
I liked the continuity in the volume even though there were a couple of smaller filler chapters to be had as well… such as one where a “secret meeting” beneath the city turned out to be a bunch of people standing around and drooling over photos taken of Shuna and Shion from when they went to the beach in the last volume. Even though it wasn’t as in-depth as the merchant story, it was still nice to see a tie-in to another previous one-off chapter!
The lightheartedness of this series continues to entertain! The volume was a bit on the short side (Amazon lists it at 194 pages but it’s more like 150) but the entertainment value was still high. As I said in a previous review, most spinoff series are just fluff and while one could argue this one is much of the same, it has a great entertainment value that puts it a notch above any others that we typically see!
