The Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii honestly have a lot of things in common. Not the least of which was that they were two consoles made after predecessors hadn’t done as well in sales (GameCube and the Wii U), and they weren’t expected to do well. Instead, not only did they do well, they blew away expectations in both console sales, and the software on the platforms.
Given how fast the Nintendo Switch had been selling over the almost five years of its life, it was inevitable that it would pass the Nintendo Wii. But according to VGChartz, they’ve now officially done that as of the end of 2021.
According to their numbers (which are not official Nintendo numbers to be clear), the Switch is at 101.88 million units sold, while the Wii is at 101.63. So thus, the Switch is the best-selling Nintendo console of all time. This is even more impressive when you consider that the Switch is apparently only starting the “back half” of its lifespan, so it’ll keep climbing, especially as big games come out this year like Pokemon Legends Arceus, Bayonetta 3, and of course, BOTW 2.
Look for an official confirmation from Nintendo about this in the next few weeks more than likely.
