Hideki Kamiya Wants To Make Okami 2

There are certain games every gaming generation that don’t just stand out from the crowd, they help define that generation of titles. And we’re not even talking the main 1st party games either, there are plenty of 3rd party titles that changed the gaming world. One of which was Okami. Made by Capcom, the game redefined how to not just play a game via the paintbrush aesthetic for combat, but it had a unique visual style, a wonderful way of interacting with the environment and more. We never did get Okami 2, but that could change in the future…

We say this because the one and only Hideki Kamiya, who you might have forgotten was the director of the original game, made a post on the YouTube Channel Cutscenes about the title, and why he might be up for doing Okami 2:

“When I was making Okami, I would have never thought that I would leave Capcom and work somewhere else. Okami had been built on various ideas, and I figured that regarding things that didn’t make it in, since I would probably have a chance to work on it again, I could foreshadow and expand on some things, addressing them in a sequel and answering player’s questions while hinting at how the story ends.”

The reason we didn’t get a sequel right off the bat was that at the time…the game didn’t sell well, even when it was ported to things like the Nintendo Wii it didn’t sell as well as Capcom had hoped. However, over time, and with the arrival of the HD port, the game did get the numbers it needed to be a true financial hit, and that got Kamiya thinking…

“At the same time, I started seeing people ask about these plot points that we left hanging, asking for a sequel. The more I see those, the more I feel this is work that I’ve left unfinished. There’s always this part of me that thinks that I need to take care of this at some point. I want to do it someday.”

As long as he does it AFTER Bayonetta 3 is released? We’d be ok with that.
