Getting started with Genshin Impact and what to know for the Future

By Scott AdamsNovember 3, 2021

Odds are if you have ever looked anywhere on the internet you will have seen a pretty big community of individuals talking about a game called Genshin Impact. You may have even wondered how you start or what you should do to move through it.

That is the purpose of this guide; welcome to Outerhaven’s Ghensin Impact Guide for Beginners.

Ghensin Imact guide party

How do you start? Well first off is just do the story and the first few missions until you get access to other world quests. Your first goal is to get as fast as you can to AR 25 and unlock the ascension quest by just utilizing the characters you get from the story with maybe doing a few summons on the Gacha banner that is out. Be sure to use your first two 10X summons on the beginner banner as they have higher rates than the other banners you have access to later on. The game provides you with a good balance of characters in the beginning. You have access to a Cryo sword user, Kaeya, a Pyro bow user, Amber, an Electro Catalyst user, Lisa, and your character who starts out as an Anemo sword user. Your first summon guarantees you a Geo claymore user, Noelle. These elements and weapon types are confusing and we will explain them later. For now, just try out all weapons and elements and see what you like to play as.

From AR (Adventure Rank) 20 to 45 is the learning period, what you like to play, who you want to build, and so on. So make sure you use it to test the characters and the elements. As soon as you do the ascension quest to continue past AR 45, you need to have a team set up that can handle higher difficulty enemies, otherwise, even a Hilichurl will be able to one-shot you dead.

Basic team building in Genshin Impact once you reach more challenging content relies on elemental reactions. When creating a four-character team you will need a good variety of elements and what they do. For example, a Pyro character attack a character previously dealt Cryo damage will do an elemental reaction of Melt. This will increase the damage that is done to the enemy. You can also build a vaporize team with a focus on Pyro and Hydro. Or a Freeze team with a focus on Hydro and Cryo. Make sure to look at the Elemental resonances and choose the effect you want for your team. Refer to the pictures below.

Once you reach AR 45, you have reached the hard grind phase. You need to have your characters leveled up to appropriate levels, It is recommended that your main DPS is level 90 once you can, and all other characters in your team around level 70-80. Do not work on all the characters you own, only the ones you use in a team. Once you have reached the appropriate levels, work on grinding artifacts. Every character has a different set of recommended artifacts so I won’t go into too much detail about that at this time.

Once you have finished sorting out your team, the next (and more annoying) thing is dealing with your resin. You most likely didn’t have to worry about it too much prior due to all the fragile resin and Primogems you were getting in the earlier Adventure Ranks. This time though, it is a lot more effort to level up or get fragile resins from Battle Pass rewards.

You will have to plan out when you want to do your daily quests for Battle Pass which includes using up to 150 resin a day. Every 8 minutes your resin increases by 1. This means 16 hours until it is full for 160 total.

Bosses require you to use resin, doing leylines for Wits or Mora require resin, Domains for artifacts, talent books, or weapon ascension material require resin. A lot of advancing individual characters and weapons require you to use resin. The best goal is to focus on a person you want to work on and find out what day their talent books are up in the talent book domain. On that day then make sure you focus on gathering as many talent books as you can. Upgrading talents requires a ton of talent books.

Being able to focus on an individual character for your Resin makes it easier too to plan out different days to accomplish what tasks need to be done. What weapon does your character use? When is the ascension material in the Ascension domain? What artifact set does the character use? Which stats does the set need for the build you want for your character? On the days you don’t use for ascension or talent domains, utilize for artifact grinding and boss drops. Usually, you’ll find a good day in the week to do your weekly bosses for those weekly boss drops.

This is just the start to finding a good mojo for your team and set up. I hope to go more in-depth in the future.
