Valve’s official Steam Deck teardown video

By Keith MitchellOctober 7, 2021
Valve's Steam Deck is being compared to the Nintendo Switch

While many of us are waiting for Valve Software’s Steam Deck to be delivered, Valve decided it might be best to show people what exactly is inside this tiny but powerful PC. This video has two purposes: showcasing just how brilliant the Steam Deck is and what we, as consumers, shouldn’t be doing.

As someone who’s been building PCs for most of their life, as well as tinkering with electronics, this small footprint scares me. One mishap, one “oops,” and you could potentially damage your Steam Deck. As much as I want to take it apart, I think this time around, I’ll wait—especially given that these devices aren’t exactly cheap.

Still, give the video below a watch.

What is the Steam Deck?

The Steam Deck is Valve’s latest gaming gadget and one that has me (and most of the PC gaming world) excited over it. Packing more power than a device of its size should, the Steam Deck can play PC games on the go, or you can connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for a modest gaming PC. With the Steam Deck, you’ll be able to play games directly from the device or tap into your existing Steam library and play games like you could with the Steam Link.

The good news is that if you’re looking to get your hands on a Steam Deck, they’re still up for preorder. However, the bad news is that Valve perhaps underestimated the hype for the device, and now orders are looking to be shipping in Q1/Q2 2022 at the earliest. If the current silicone shortage that the world is experiencing doesn’t cause that to get pushed back.

Depending on when you placed your preorder for the Steam Deck will determine when yours will arrive. For example, I preordered the Steam Deck the day it was announced, and I’m told I will get one until Q1 2022. I’ll be happy if that happens, but something tells me that I won’t see my order until much later.
