HBO announced that it would not be moving forward with a second season of the historical horror series Lovecraft Country. Showrunner Green and her team worked on a full layout of what would be in season 2. Since the book’s events were completed in Season 1, the story in the following season would have gone in a different direction with new characters. HBO was, it seems, unconvinced of the direction and has pulled the plug on the project.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
“I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of,” said Green.

As someone who loved the book, I do have to say I find the details of Green’s new take to be interesting but not necessarily ones that would fit to the spirit of the book, especially as the first season already took some different directions from the original source material. Perhaps she can take some of these ideas into new project.
It’s not like building off an established literary work for a second season is a new idea. Neil Gaiman recently announced that Good Omens would be coming back for a second season based on some ideas he and co-writer Terry Pratchett had before Pratchett’s death but that we never written down.
