Nintendo Switch Sales In Japan Surpass 20 Million

By Todd BlackJune 2, 2021

One of the most important numbers or details about the Nintendo Switch since its launch in March 2017 was that of its console sales numbers. Many saw this as the “last chance” of Nintendo to get a big console on the market (which is odd when you think about it) and the Switch smashed all expectations. At present it’s over 85 million units sold worldwide between the regular version and the Nintendo Switch Lite version. But now, we know how much of that is coming from Japan.

A new report from Famitsu revealed that the country has bought over 20 million console Switch units as of May 23rd of this year. Here’s a bigger breakdown of that:

  • Nintendo Switch: 16,168,420 units
  • Nintendo Switch Lite: 3,849,858 units

As for the top 5 games on the Switch in Japan, it’s an interesting assortment of titles:

  1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 6,778,146 units sold
  2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 4,285,272 units sold
  3. Pokémon Sword and Shield: 4,052,668 units sold
  4. Splatoon 2: 3,868,221 units sold
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 3,844,200 units sold

With E3 2021 on the way, you can bet people in Japan and around the world are going to pay attention to what is anounced.
