Neon Genesis Evangelion Breaks IMAX Record

By Josh PiedraMarch 12, 2021

Whether it’s Your Name, Spirited Away, or Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, it appears anime movies just love to break records. Now, you can add Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time to the list of record-breaking films.

While this movie is just getting started, it ended up breaking the IMAX record for highest-grossing opening day film in Japan, earning around $740,000 USD in IMAX ticket sales. It also set the record for highest percentage of IMAX opening day gross for a local film in Japan. IMAX accounted for 10% of the film’s opening day gross on only 1-2% of total screens.

In all theaters combined, the film sold 539,623 tickets for a total of, roughly, $7.3 million USD.

The film opened on March 8 after it was delayed due to COVID-19 from its original opening day of January 23.
