Back 4 Blood is the Left 4 Dead successor we’ve been waiting for

While Turtle Rock Studio’s Back 4 Blood was announced in 2019, the team hasn’t said much since it’s original announcement. Of course, that all changed as of last night when we got our first look at some gameplay during The Game Awards Show, and damn, does it look good. When the trailer first ran, I first thought we were seeing something new for Left 4 Dead. Mainly because we had all forgotten about Back 4 Blood, and there are lots of cues taken from Left 4 Dead. Which makes sense since Turtle Rock did work on that series.

Back 4 Blood is a thrilling cooperative first-person shooter from the creators of the critically acclaimed Left 4 Dead franchise. You are at the center of a war against the Ridden. These once-human hosts of a deadly parasite have turned into terrifying creatures bent on devouring what remains of civilization. With humanity’s extinction on the line, it’s up to you and your friends to take the fight to the enemy, eradicate the Ridden, and reclaim the world.

As seen, not only are there your garden variety of zombies, but also those with special abilities. We’ve already seen one that can use some sort of webbing as crowd control and one very massive and grotesque zombie – perhaps a boss? Now, this isn’t new as we’ve seen this in Left 4 Dead, and even Saber Interactive’s World War Z (which is also a great game and similar to Left 4 Dead – go play it!) so it will be interesting what TRS does change up the formula.

Check out the reveal trailer below.

Turtle Rock also announced an upcoming alpha on December 17, though it’s only for the PC. They’ve also revealed the release date of June 22, 2021. So be sure to mark that on your calendars; I already did.

I must have spent hundreds of hours playing Left 4 Dead with friends, at LAN parties, and with my son. The idea that we’re about to do this all over again is an exciting one, and I can’t wait to blast some zombies in co-op. Here’s to hoping this does everything Left 4 Dead did and improves on it. Fingers crossed, Turtle Rock, please don’t let us down.

Back 4 Blood releases on June 22, 2021, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). Are you a fan of Left 4 Dead, and if so, does Back 4 Blood interest you? Let us know in the comments.
