Report: Sony Close to Buying Crunchyroll

By Josh PiedraOctober 30, 2020
Crunchyroll

There have been reports circulating around the business world today that Sony is growing closer to finalizing a deal with acquiring Crunchyroll. Right now, it is being reported that Sony’s bid for acquiring the anime streaming service would be about $957 million USD, or about 100 Billion Yen.

This is the latest installment of a story that had broken not that long ago where it appeared as if parent company AT&T was looking to sell Crunchyroll to Sony for $1.5 Billion USD. Sony, reportedly, rejected the offer and now it seems as if they have made a counteroffer.

While AT&T was reported to be shopping their brand around, the information states that Sony is, currently and presumably, the only bidder which makes it more likely that AT&T could accept the offer.

Sony already owns Funimation, which previously had a partnership with Crunchyroll to stream content on each other’s networks; however, when Funimation was acquired by Sony, that partnership was terminated.

If the sale goes through, Sony will own two of the top five anime streaming sites in both the U.S. and the world, the other three being Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.
