Steve from Minecraft is the next Smash Bros. Ultimate challenger

By Poch SaldanaOctober 1, 2020

Somehow, someway, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still manages to surprise us. Minecraft is possibly the most popular game of the last decade but seeing the blocky builder strike the likes of Toon Link is surreal. The reveal trailer is attached below.

The character’s toolkit seems accurate to the source material to say the least. It looks like they’ll be incorporating a multitude of elements to both Steve and the new stage. This includes mining, building, and even different biomes. Alex, zombie, and Endermen are were also revealed though they’re most likely pallet swaps for Steve and not full-fledged characters or Echo fighters.

Details of the fighter’s release have yet to be announced but a special showcase titled “Mr. Sakurar Presents ‘Steve & Alex&” will broadcast on October 3, 7:30 AM PT just before Minecraft Live that will dive deeper into the special mechanics of the new fighter. A release date should be hinted at during the showcase as well.

Love it or hate it, having a Minecraft representative is wild, bizarre, and utterly shocking. I personally can’t wait to see how well they include the survival game’s mechanics into a free-for-all fighting game.

Big fan of games, writing, and writing about games! Two things Poch will always stand by--the Vita was ahead of its time and the world is a better place with a new Rhythm Heaven on the horizon.
