Looks like Facebook couldn’t wait to show the world its upcoming VR headset refresh and “accidentally” leaked the upcoming Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.
Earlier today, Facebook pushed live a page with detailed Oculus Quest 2 information. Including several videos showcasing the new headset, as well as the technical specifications of the device.
While we reported on the Quest 2 headset in the past, nothing was confirmed, but now we can verify that the past information does match up with this new headset. According to the leaked page, the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset will include 6GB of RAM, 64GB/256GB of storage, 2x 2K displays, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 processor, and updated controllers. The documentation goes on to state that the Oculus Quest 2 headset will play all the original Oculus Quest games. There hasn’t been any information on what new Oculus Quest 2 games will be revealed when the headset is launched.
What’s also interesting is the mention of a Mixed Reality Capture feature, allowing owners of the Quest 2 (and possibly Quest 1) the ability to send capture directly to the headset.
Curious enough, it appears that several YouTube tech influencers, including UrAvgConsumer and Potato Jet, have had some had on with the Oculus Quest 2 already. I’ll be looking forward to checking out those videos whenever they’re released.
Price-wise, while nothing was mentioned by the leaked information, it does appear that Walmart may have leaked the pricing a week ago. Walmart had briefly listed both variations of the Oculus Quest 2, 64GB at $299.99, and the $256GB at $399.99. If these prices are real, then this is going to be an absolute steal for VR gamers. With the updated processor and memory, the Quest 2 could pose a bigger threat to the Oculus Rift headset. Which is something that Oculus Rift S owners, including myself, are fearful of as Facebook looks to be pushing the Quest as its premium headset and possibly abandoning the Rift S. Of course, that’s all speculation, we’ll know more during the Facebook Connect which takes place in a few weeks.
This might be a good time if you’re an Oculus Quest owner to look at selling your existing headset while you wait for the refresh.
