First Trailer for ‘Dune’ Proves the Spice Will Flow (Despite COVID)

Many movies are looking to move their premiere dates in the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, but one big-budget movie is instead moving forward on its sandworm to a late 2020 release. Denis Villeneuve’s re-adaptation of the Frank Herbert sci-fi classic has got its first trailer, and confirmation that it will be showing in theaters this December.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Villeneuve has clearly gone all out on the visuals, with massive spaceships, huge deserts, and a much darker color scheme than the original 1984 film. If you imagined a sweeping sci-fi epic, this is the kind of movie you would picture. Also that sandworm is massive and rendered in a lot of loving detail. Looking at the trailer, it seems like the film will encapsulate the majority of the original film, and first book’s, plot, which could mean a potential sequel based on the other books of the series if it does well.

Dune is packed with big names, starring Timothée Chalamet  as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac as his parents, Stellan Skarsgård and Dave Bautista as the villains from House Harkonnen, and Zendaya as love interest and Fremen Chani. The cast includes Josh Brolin, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Dune is set to premiere in theaters on December 18, 2020.
