CW Developing ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Reboot (But Not How You Think)

By Sara Roncero-MenendezAugust 25, 2020

Growing up as a girl in the 1990s, Powerpuff Girls were my jam, and they were everywhere. Given how popular, and nostalgic, the show is, it really shouldn’t be surprising that it was going to get a reboot someday. And when the CW announced that they were developing a live-action reboot of the show, I was intrigued. That is, until I read the description of the show.

According to Variety, this new show will focus on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?” Talk about a shift in tone from the original and 2016 animated reboot.

The show is being executive produced by Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, the latter of whom is known for writing quirky, dark comedies like Juno and United States of Tara. Regnier has also worked on similar kinds of projects, including the CW’s iZombie.

This kind of grim and bleak adaptation seems pretty in-line with what CW does with franchises. I mean, compare Riverdale to the Archie comics it’s based on. Fans on Twitter seem divided between people who outright hate the direction of the premise, and others willing to give it a chance based on the creative team behind it. Either way, the show is only in development, and therefore might never even see the light of day, if it fails to land with test audiences and studio executives.

Also, am I the only one wondering how they’re going to make a live-action version of Mojo Jojo?

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
