Stranger Things Will Continue Past Season 4

While the pandemic has likely delayed our return to Hawkins, Indiana for season four of Netflix’s Stranger Things, the fourth season won’t be the series’ last. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers confirmed that the show will continue for a fifth season and beyond.

While the Coronavirus pandemic has had adverse effects on production, it seems it may have actually given Matt and Ross Duffer time to think up new story elements for the future. When asked if season four would be the last, the creators had this to say:

Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.

They also discussed other elements of the show, especially for the most recent third season. Each season has its own mood and tone, which seems to come from the holiday season it takes place during. With season one set during Christmas, season two during Halloween, and season three during July 4th, the Duffer Brothers confirmed they went for the tone of “big Hollywood summer blockbusters” with more comedy and action than previous seasons. They also praised the 80s mall set and the now-iconic Neverending Story duet between Dustin and Suzie.

With summer in season, now’s a great time to watch (or re-watch, or re-re-watch) season three of Stranger Things, which we likened to “the best sci-fi programming” in our review. And if you’re awaiting season four, you can check out the first trailer for it as well as our hopes and speculations for season four. Perhaps Stranger Things will now be its own never-ending story?
