Add one more Xbox announcement for the day and this one is a big one. The rumored discontinuation of the Xbox One X and the Xbox One S Digital has proven to be correct as Microsoft has officially announced that both systems are being discontinued.
Microsoft reached out to The Verge and provided the following statement.
As we ramp into the future with Xbox Series X, we’re taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. Xbox One S will continue to be manufactured and sold globally.
While this makes sense, with the Xbox Series X and possibly the Xbox Series X being released later this year. I wonder if leaving the Xbox One S as the console that’s still will be produced is the right call. Compared to the Xbox One X, it’s an inferior console, while the X is perhaps Microsoft’s best piece of Xbox hardware that produced to date. Well, outside of the upcoming Xbox Series X. It’s more powerful, and smaller, and damn does it look sexy.
While the production of both consoles is ramping down, there are still plenty of them to be found in local and online stores. I’d imagine those will continue to be sold until the stock is completely depleted.
I love my Xbox One X, and I’ve replaced all of the existing Xbox One’s in our home with it. I also picked up the Cyberpunk 2077 Limited Edition Xbox One X, which remains in its box. I had planned on trading one of the Xbox One X’s in for the Series X, but now I’m not so sure. With the console being discontinued, chances are we won’t be able to either sell it or trade it in for a worthwhile price.
Damn, the Xbox One X hasn’t even been available for three years before it was officially killed off. Now you have to wonder if Sony will follow suit and discontinue the PlayStation 4 Pro or if they’ll continue to produce it. Chances are that the PS4 Pro will also meet an early fate as Sony is doing everything in their power to get gamers to upgrade to the PlayStation 5, sooner than later.
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, and Series S, are slated to be released something during Q4 2020, which is better known as the shopping Holiday. They’ll be released alongside the PlayStation 5, Sony’s next-generation of gaming console.
Microsoft will be hosting a game only Livestream on July 23rd, 2020, where we’ll get our first look at some extended gameplay of Halo Infinite. Not to mention a few other first-party games.
