Universal is Developing a ‘Wolfman’ Remake, Potentially Starring Ryan Gosling

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMay 30, 2020

Remember how the box-office bomb that was The Mummy (2017) all but killed Universal’s Dark Universe, and we all breathed a sigh of relief? Yeah, might have been celebrating too soon. Variety is reporting that Universal is working on a Wolfman film, and is looking for Ryan Gosling to star.

Now, this news isn’t all that surprising, what with Invisible Man doing well as a joint Universal-Bloomhouse venture. Most critics point to that film’s success being due in large part to leaning into the horror angle and not a blockbuster. According to Variety’s sources, the script, written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, of Orange is the New Black, will take place in a modern setting and will be “in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller Nightcrawler, with an obvious supernatural twist.”

Sources also say this is being developed as a vehicle for actor Ryan Gosling, who apparently was the one to pitch the idea. No director has been chosen yet, but Cory Finley, who directed HBO’s Bad Education.

There’s no word yet as to when we might expect this film to even begin production, let alone come out amid a wave of delays for other planned films. For now, AMC Theaters is still vowing not to play any Universal films after a comment made by NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell on releasing films in theaters and on-demand.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
