‘Cardcaptor Sakura’ is Coming to Netflix June 1

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMay 19, 2020

In crazy confined times like these, couldn’t we all use some magical girl cuteness to get us through the day? Netflix, in its campaign to accrue more and more anime shows to its growing collection, has revealed it will now stream Cardcaptor Sakura, a magical girl show from the late 1990s.

When you go to the title’s page on Netflix, it says “Seasons coming June 1” which implies that, at the very least, we will get the show’s first two seasons, in not the third. Whether Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, the more recent fourth season/continuation, will be included is not certain, though it has been licensed by Funimation and is available for purchase. There’s also no word on if an English dub will be included in this June 1 release.

If you’ve never seen the show, or just need a refresher, Cardcaptor Sakura follows tween Sakura Kinomoto as she uncovers a strange book in her family’s library. When she opens it, she releases the Clow Cards, magical artifacts that control different elements or powers. She teams up with Kero, the guardian of the cards, in order to collect them once more. There’s fighting, love, and lots of cuteness abound. The show is based on the CLAMP manga of the same name. It was brought to the U.S. as Cardcaptors in the late 1990s and heavily edited before being re-released unedited and with a new dub in the mid-2010s.

Cardcaptor Sakura arrives on Netflix on June 1, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
