Fighting game tournament EVO 2020 now canceled, will host online event instead

Add yet another gaming-related event that has been canceled thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This time around, it’s the super popular fighting game tournament, EVO 2020, that would have taken place this July 2020

The cancelation news came via the official Evo Twitter, with the following statement:

Due to COVID-19, we are sadly cancelling Evo 2020 at Mandalay Bay and refunding all purchased tickets.

But to keep the Evo spirit alive, we’re bringing the event online this summer. More information coming soon!

The health and well-being of our community is our highest priority. We hope everyone stays safe during this time.

To be honest, we figured it would be canceled just like Combo Breaker 2020 was, but we expected this to happen sooner. It’s the right thing to do, as mentioned. Everyone who paid for tickets will be refunded, however, this doesn’t include any hotel or travel fees.

As for taking the event online, that’s going to cause a bit of concern. Especially for some titles that are in the tournament line-up, but don’t have the best netcode. One game, in particular, being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a game that many have requested Nintendo do something to fix. Wherever the game is played, it draws huge crowds, so being a headliner at the now online Evo summer could pose as a problem. I wonder if this will prompt Nintendo to actually do something about the game code.

As for the Evo team, no doubt they’re frustrated about this all, but in the end, they made the right call. I know they were holding out for hope but everyone’s health is far important than anything else right now.
