Disney Delays Movie Releases, Moves ‘Artemis Fowl’ to Streaming

By Sara Roncero-MenendezApril 4, 2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, it’s looking like summer blockbuster season is going to be cut short this year. As such, studios are delaying the releases of their top films in order to “make sure audiences can see them” or, in layman’s terms, they want to make sure they can get the best box office they can. And of course, Disney is no different.

Disney announced the rescheduling of several of their upcoming feature films including Mulan, Black Widow, Jungle Cruise, and Free Guy. As a result, other films were shuffled around as well. Captain Marvel 2, for example, has been moved to July 8, 2022, with the fifth untitled Indiana Jones movie slated to come out in that same month.

In addition, they’ve moved their adaptation of Artemis Fowl to their streaming service, Disney+. “With audiences largely unable to attend theaters in the current environment, we are thrilled to offer the premiere of Artemis Fowl on Disney+,” Ricky Strauss, president of content and marketing at Disney+, said in a statement. “Director Kenneth Branagh and his spectacular cast take viewers right into the vibrant, fantasy world of the beloved book, which fans have been waiting to see brought to life onscreen for years. It’s great family entertainment that is the perfect addition to Disney+’s summer lineup.”

Here’s the full list of films and their new release dates:

  • Free Guy – previously dated on 7/3/20 moves to 12/11/20
  • Bob’s Burgers – previously dated on 7/17/20 moves to 4/9/21

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
