‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ speeds to an early digital release this March 31st

Talk about “gotta go fast”

Sega’s and Paramount Pictures ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie is an amazing movie than every video game fan needs to check out. Not only is it one the best video game live-action adaptions in quite some time (check out our review here). So good that the Blue Blur managed to snag 200 million at the box office. Now, thanks to the COVID-19 concerns that have completely wrecked the box office, among other things, the movie is now getting an early release on March 31st, 2020.

Paramount Pictures will release the movie, digitally first on the usual market places; Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play and several others. Following this release, the movie will receive a 4K Ultra HD, Bluray and DVD release on May 19, 2020.

Both the digital and physical releases will see the following extra content:

  • Commentary by director Jeff Fowler and the voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz
  • Around the World in 80 Seconds—See Sonic’s next adventure!
  • Deleted Scenes—Director Jeff Fowler introduces deleted scenes
  • Bloopers—Laugh along with Jim Carrey and the cast
  • “Speed Me Up” Music Video
  • For the Love of Sonic—Jim Carrey and the cast discuss what Sonic the Hedgehog means to them
  • Building Robotnik with Jim Carrey—See Jim Carrey bring supervillain, Dr. Robotnik, to life
  • The Blue Blur: Origins of Sonic—Explore the origins of the legendary Blue Blur
  • Sonic On Set—Visit the set with the voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz

Sonic the Hedgehog will join a list of other upcoming movies that have been affected by COVID-19, including Disney’s release of ‘Onward’, which will see a digital release as of March 20, 2020. Sony Picture’s ‘Bloodshot’ is also seeing an early digital release as the movie failed to generate the reception and box office numbers that were expected, again thanks to COVID-19.

Ironically enough, what we’re seeing now is exactly what countless others have asked studios to do. That being releasing new and upcoming movies directly to digital releases. Sadly, it only took a pandemic to make these studios see that this idea can work. Now the question is, which other movies will also see an early digital release, and how devastated will the theater landscape be if this thread continues.
