‘Candyman’ Reboot Trailer Brings Back Tony Todd in Iconic Role

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 27, 2020

If you’ve never seen the 1992 film Candyman, then you are missing out on a classic of horror. But that’s okay — producer Jordan Peele is bringing the terror to a whole new generation with a remake/spiritual sequel of the cult classic.

From the looks of it, Candyman will follow a similar plot of the 1992 original. The child from the first film, Anthony McCoy, is now all grown up, returning to Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project as a means of exploring the Candyman legend. And yes, the core concept remains the same — to summon Candyman, you say his name in front of a mirror five times and he comes to kill you with his hook hand and bees. But when Anthony begins exposing more and more people to the legend of the Candyman, the murders begins anew…and Anthony seems to have a bigger part to play than he could have ever imagined.

The biggest draw is that Tony Todd, who played the original Candyman, is back for the film. His voice can be heard in the trailers, which will be instantly reminiscent for any horror fan. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II play Anthony, the artist in over his head. The rest of the cast includes Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo and Cassie Kramer. The director is Nia DaCosta, who got a lot of praise for her indie crime thriller Little Woods last year. Peele is producing the project, which will likely pull in any skeptics. Plus the fact that the trailer is loaded with blood and gore should help too.

Candyman premieres in theaters on June 12, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
